Rikkai fans, does anyone know what is actually wrong with Yukimura? Is it ever stated explicitly? I know he had to go for a surgery that had a low chance of success, but what kind of illness requires a surgery THAT dangerous, and then the kid can go play tennis at the National level a month later?

It's stated that he has/had GB--a disorder that effects the nerves and muscles. There *is* no surgical cure for it, however--that was completely made up. While recovery from GB is almost always assured, even in the worst of cases (where patients have to be put on life support because their lungs can't function), it is a slow and painful recovery process, usually taking up to at least a year or as many as several years.

GB... (i'm going to butcher this) Guillian Baire... or something like that.... [winces]

So... they gave him an unusual disease without bothering to pay attention to the fact that there is no surgery and he would NOT recover completely in the span of a month?

Riiiiight... I think I'll just make something up. >.

... Looking at new information, I think maybe they *didn't* specify, but all the symptoms reported pointed towards GB.... [frowns] I'm confused now. [sighs]

There's lots of things that affect the nerves and muscles, though... what are his actual symptoms?

In the anime, it's never stated. In the manga -- I've got the issues, but I haven't double-checked them -- it *is* specified as GB. And then later on, Konomi made a statement about the mistake he'd made with the disease, since it doesn't actually behave the way he portrayed it.

Of course, neither do the laws of physics...
